Hi there, my name’s Ben Stiff and I’m a team skater for BoardFree, before which I had never extended my longboarding skills any further than the school run. That was until my friend Sophie had a stroke, aged only 15. Kicked into gear by this shocking event, I have decided to spread my longboarding wings and skate the length of the UK with the help of BoardFree, Weetabix, Chilled Turtle Clothing, 4head, Seismic Trucks, and Motor Tabs.
This will be a 2 world record attempt as I will try to be the fastest and youngest to reach the 900 mile distance. If you are interested in sponsoring this amazing trip please visit www.justgiving.com/boardfreebornfree. All donations go towards the charity CORDA who specialise in the prevention of strokes, in people of all ages.
Having been a semi-serious longboarder for the best part of the last 5 years I thought it was only right to try and progress a little bit. The run from school to home had become a mundane task and I needed a little excitement for myself and my 4 wheeled friend… Two days after this thought rolled into my head I found myself perched around B&Q’s finest outdoor table with my family, all blissfully unaware of what I was about to propose. I turn to my mother and quite calmly say “I want to skate the length of the country”. Later that evening I look up online if this had been done before, quite certain that no-one would be insane enough to try it. Not the case.
I found myself at the page of a Mr. Dave Cornthwaite, who had skated the UK , as a warm up for a skate across Australia. Sheesh, I think to myself, this guy’s a machine! He’s gonna be far too busy to talk to me. Again, not the case.
An hour later I’m deep in skater talk with the man himself, he tells me he would love to help. Hold on. World record holder Dave Cornthwaite wants to help me, do a trip he calls a warm up? This guy is something else…
I sleep that night with the biggest smile I have had for weeks. My year rolls on, and like every other teenage ambition, it dwindles away with the thoughts of ‘nah that will never happen, can’t be arsed’. Then, out of the blue, my 15 year old friend Sophie had a stroke, at 15! This was too much, I was torn up. Three seizures follow and she is in hospital for over 3 weeks. I go to visit her as soon as I could and tell her I am definitely going ahead with the trip, and all the makings will go to a charity dedicated to making sure nothing like this would happen again, to anyone.
I get back on the computer and type away like crazy to Dave, he is totally supportive and offers all the help he can get his hands on, which is quite a lot as you could imagine after skating across Australia. A year later, and after cancelling the trip once due to insufficient transport, I am ready to embark on the trip of a lifetime. Sponsored up to the teeth with everything from trucks to headache relief strips, I am now deep in training and the trip is edging ever closer. Please feel free to follow me on this trip through my daily blog, sponsorship updates and pretty much everything that the average world record attempting skateboarder goes through. |
